Anderson v1 pg348-349 - letter #339

       Many thanks! –

He has now asked for his testimonial. I have seen several in his possession, so he certainly does not require one from me.  But as soon as he gets it, he can go to the devil if he wants to and whenever it occurs to him to do so – Must I give him this t[estimonial]?. I think not, since it would be regarded as a pledge or a guarantee – To fetch wood, to light the stove, to carry out the chamber-pot – he says that he is not fitted for duties of that kind, and so forth. So you see how little one can judge by appearances in the case of vagabonds of that type.  I shall await a reply about the t[estimonial], but in any case there is still time until tomorrow morning –

I gave him a large room to himself with permission to use a stove.  He calls it a vent-hole for smoke.  Yet last winter I myself used it frequently and this winter for whole days at a time –
